SPOTLIGHT ON BCIA MEMBER
Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL)

The Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) is involved in various energy-related fields, ranging from mining to low rank coal processing, in order to ensure stable energy supplies and sustainable economic development and contribute to efforts to control global warming.

JCOAL activities include coal resource development; research, development and demonstration of clean coal and carbon capture technologies; project planning and coordination; business development and promotion; information exchange and human resources development.

Early last year, JCOAL became the first international member of Brown Coal Innovation Australia (BCIA). JCOAL’s international activities include support for the sustainable development, commercialisation, transfer and dissemination of clean coal technologies throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The reciprocal membership arrangement between BCIA and JCOAL is fostering linkages between Australian and Japanese researchers and industry participants. The membership also enables opportunities for knowledge sharing and research collaboration in low-emissions, low rank coal utilisation.

JCOAL was established nearly 23 years ago and currently has more than 100 member associations. The centre is headquartered in Tokyo and hosts the world-renowned ‘Clean Coal Day in Japan’ international symposium which is held in September each year.

JCOAL is also active in human resources development in various coal-producing countries throughout Asia. The centre coordinates projects which support the transfer of advanced clean coal technologies and the training of coal engineers from China, Indonesia and Vietnam.
