Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation (CSIRO)

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world.

CSIRO’s vision is to make a profound and positive impact for the future through delivering innovative solutions for industry, society and the environment.

We do this by using science to solve real issues. Our research makes a difference to people and the planet.

CSIRO’s Advanced Coal Technology Portfolio is the largest coal research program in Australia, developing technologies across the entire value chain – to support safe and efficient coal mining, minimise environmental impact and provide low emission power generation from coal.

We are working collaboratively with government, industry and research partners to meet national and global greenhouse gas reduction targets and facilitate the transition to a carbon constrained future while maintaining the nation’s economic prosperity.

CSIRO’s research includes:

  • Technologies to increase efficiency of coal recovery while reducing fugitive emissions.

  • New technologies to produce energy with substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Carbon capture and storage technologies that are commercially viable for industry uptake.

Through our multidisciplinary and extensive science and engineering capabilities, CSIRO is able to undertake comprehensive research and development programs that underpin safe, productive and reliable coal recovery and utilisation and low carbon emission energy generation.
